  The reason was the turbocharger, which gets better at pumping air the higher you go in altitude, because the same engine exhaust has more of a pressure drop to reach ambient atmospheric pressure and so it can do more work to spin the turbocharger. Superchargers can't do that. There, I just saved you 48 minutes.

  My mother was a machinist at the Wright plant in Cincinnati OH where they were building the Wright R-3350s  where she met my father, an inspector until he left for the war. When he came home in 1946 they got married and I was born in 1949. 77 yrs old myself now, a USAF vet (1969-1973) and all I can do now is often sit here with tears in my eyes as I watch what is going on in America currently.

  Stellite was created in 1887 by Elwood Hayes in Kokomo Indiana by experimenting with alloys of cobalt and nickel with the intention of using the alloy to make cutlery. However it was found that the alloy could be used as machine tools. It actually became harder under high heat. In 1910 a license to make stellite was given to the Deloro mining and reduction company in Deloro Ontario. At that location was a large cobalt smelter that had originally been created to smelt the cobalt ore mined in Cobalt Ontario. In 1941 at the Deloro Ontario operation developments were made in the casting of stellite parts for the war effort. The company eventually moved its operations to the city of Bellville Ontario where it still operates today.
