A 52 minute video, i expected it to be a heavy watch, but it was infact a lighter watch.

So these particular units were not meant to be carried around. Montres Buler S.A. manufactured these in the late 50's through the early 70's, the packaging calls it a 'Buler desk lighter'. They were designed for businessmen that would have them on their desks taking the place of both a desk clock and a desk lighter back when people smoked at their offices. This particular one is the older version, made late 50's through early to mid 60's, they then switched to a butane version with a battery powered quartz movement. I have the same one you have in goldtone, unfortunately you're missing the best part. It came with a special winding key that fit over the stem (since when it's installed in the lighter it's difficult to reach the stem to wind it).

Next time on the bench: this car has a broken clock. Let's get it running again. And while we're at it, we'll have a look at the grinding sound from the gearbox.
I'd honestly love to see that.

If someone told me 20 years ago I'd be addicted to watching watch restorations, I'd have said they were crazy. Yet here we are.

I think the balance staff was already broken, or at least bent and very weak. When you first took the watch out of its housing and it kinda ran, the balance was already wobbling.

My husband was in the Coast Guard in the seventies. He was on an icebreaker. He got a zippo lighter that had the ship’s name on it with a picture of a penguin. He would always show it to people even though it didn’t work.
So I watched a few YouTube videos and restored it myself. We occasionally smoke cigars and the lighter works like a champ.

I strongly believe we are one to two videos away from „I recently bought a watchmakers lathe…“ 😅

Considering that 1: the balance wheel was wobbling a bit before and 2: it ran better after you replaced the balance staff, I think it might have had a slightly bent pivot. So you likely would have had to replace it anyway.

Love how it doesn’t have to be an expensive watch/movement as long as it’s interesting.

Marshall I just want to say when I first started watching you at like 100k you made me love watches so much and now I have an insane collection that I will hopefully get to pass down to my kids.
