After being diagnosed last year, I returned to the same university I flunked out of in 1997. My last semester before dropping out, I received straight Fs. But I just finished my third semester of straight As. Treatment makes a difference. Finishing your degree is possible. Even at 52 years old. Edit: Am now about to start my final semester. I'll be graduating this May '26 with straight As.

"Reverse ego depletion" explains part of why using my hyperfocus to catch a productivity wave can be very effective. I also call it, "making hay while the sun shines."

In my experience, ego depletion is most relevant when I've spent my energy on something I find particularly difficult or disheartening. When I spend my energy on an area that matches my talents and enthusiasms, then spending energy creates more energy.

Enthusiasm, progress, enjoyment in my work, confidence that I'm heading in the right direction, all these contribute to energy use creating more energy.

"Remove needless friction", golly yes, so important.

Having ADHD, my brain gets drained a lot easily because it tends to work a lot harder to stay focused. People often think I’m being lazy and lack of motivation. It’s just that they don’t understand how easily overwhelmed I get. Even the small tasks feel like too much. But what I try to do is to even break down the smaller tasks and not being so hard on myself. I know I’ll have bad days, but what matters most are the small things I still accomplish throughout the day. It’s all about showing up, even if it’s just a little at a time.

While I didn’t see the last video this is referring to, it’s nice to see someone clarifying their mistake on what they spoke about before. Thanks for making this. Believing you don’t have willpower will absolutely reinforce that in ourselves. While it can be difficult to find the willpower, it is indeed possible and to build on itself.

opinion: it’s not ego depletion but energy depletion that makes a difference. If you are tired, it’s hard to exercise willpower because it’s hard to exercise any power. It doesn’t matter if it was exercising your will or if it was anything else that drained you. Drained is drained.

With severe ADHD, I have found that the amount of mental effort I apply to a task doesn't correlate consistently to success. Some days things are easy, and some days, they are hard. If my willpower acts according to my internal beliefs, which in turn have been shaped by these inconsistent experiences, then I would naturally expect my willpower to be inconsistent as well. And I would have trouble weighing the effort required to do a task, since I won't know in advance just how much mental effort will be required. I could see that leading to the "wall of awful" - because something MIGHT require a lot of effort, I feel I need to muster far more willpower than I may actually need to ensure success. It would be interesting to see what a study comparing ADHD people to neurotypical people finds.

It's a good thing that I ate dinner before I watched this one.

The fact that you made an entire video making a clarification of your other video says a lot to your dedication tothe science and getting accurate information out. Also, it says a LOT about your integrity and wanting to do it right. Thank you!

I've always viewed willpower as a hidden muscle. Like a muscle, if you overwork it, you'll be exhausted and need significant rest to recover. But similarly, like a muscle, the more your work it with proper and regular rest, the stronger it gets, and conversely, the less your work it, the more atrophied it will become. Like with physical health, you need proper rest and nutrition, as well as regular exercise.
