I hope this becomes the next mega-trend for the sake of ours and our children's mental health and will power.

You just made the point that no child under the age of 16 should have a smart phone, thank you.

A long time ago I saw this couple (maybe mid 30's), sitting across from their daughter (about 3-4 yrs) at a restaurant. Both parents were buried in their phone, and the sweet little girl was just sitting there, kind of looking around , mostly looking at her parents. I had tears in my eyes. My daughter & I sat together every night and ate dinner together, talking about our day, giving her space to open up and talk if she wanted. From age 0-16.

I have not watched, listened to, or read the news for 3 years, and there has been no negative consequence.

The irony of posting a video about getting rid of your smart phone that a majority of the audience for is on a smart phone is not lost on me.

I gave up social media over a year ago and the thing that has been the hardest and broken my heart is the sheer number of people who were 100% okay with removing me from their lives over that choice, if they cant keep up with me on FB or whatever then they literally cannot be bothered to text or see me in person. I am so sick of hearing how theres a loneliness epidemic when everyone wants a village but no one wants to be a villager! People who used to show up for me with food when I had surgery or roll up their sleeves to help me move, and I would have done the same for them, but now? I have no one who I could call for any of those messy life moments like that anymore.

I accidentally forgot my phone when I left the house for an appointment & some errands the other day & at first it was 'oh crap, do I have time to turn around?!' (no, I didn't). So I leaned into it & just called it a 1980s day. It was alarming to realize how often I reached into my pocket for absolutely no reason but to scroll fb or reddit. Now I'm starting with leaving my phone in another room so that I can't just reach for it.

But in my defense about looking down... I was the person who always had a book with me for as long as I can remember. So even in the 80s & 90s, I was looking down in line & at restaurants (when alone). I'm gong to go back to that.

I just saw a video of someone who travelled from another country to visit their parents and their parents were on their phones not interacting with their kid. Everyone is addicted to these things and it’s alarming.

I’m the only person at work dinners who leaves their smart phone in their motel room. I don’t know why people think checking their phone in the middle of dinner conversation isn’t rude. I gave up social media nearly 2 and half years ago and don’t miss it a bit. It is definitely better for our brains to stop and think, enjoy a bit of down time than to be constantly scrolling phones. If I know I will have to wait around, I take a book to read.

Yup. That's the truth. Living without a smartphone for the last 8 years. I'm happy I'm not showing my kids that I look at a glowing rectangle all the time.
