Walnuts stay in my freezer all year. They are added to oatmeal or musli or fruit salads. Nuts in the freezer is the way to go. I buy 2 lb bags of walnuts when price is right.

Unfortunately, I don't have the space in my kitchen. I have a Japanese friend who comes from Osaka. We are online friends and have never met face to face. He lives in a tiny flat with an even smaller kitchen than what I have and doesn't have a freezer. I'm from the UK. Even though, I can't do what your grandma does, I still find this video fascinating. I like cooking Japanese food a lot and I am lucky to be able to source Japanese products very easily where I live. I occasionally see a can of pumpkin in my supermarket and even bought a can once but I think it was sweetened so it just sat on my shelf until it expired. I didn't know you could freeze butter. That's good to know. Dried fruit is very expensive in the UK. Everything is.

I am Japanese American and do what your grandma does. Hahaha ! We have several large freezers and a large storage room for supplies. I buy those can goods by the case. We have a walnut tree and freeze the nuts. We use the packaging machine which helps. I grew up in Hawaii and we also prepare for hurricane season, tofal waves, etc. we buy huge bags of rice too. I also freeze dried fruit used for baking and breakfast.
