The Advance/Battle sprites are literally peak. They're like the perfect transition of character art into 2D pixels, plus they not only look cool, but they give the characters so much personality and expressions.

To be fair to the Sonic Spinball sprite; you're not meant to see it for more thank like 5 seconds since you're supposed to be curled up in a ball most of the time doing the pinball stuff, so i'm not surprised they didn't put a lot of effort into the standing sprite

7:53 weird fact, when i was younger, looking at this Sonic sprite from far away, i could barely distinguish his skin color apart from the rest of his body, and it made me think Sonic was wearing a red jacket of some sorts, if i drew it exactly as i imagined you'd get a better understanding of what i mean, i cannot be the only one who thought of this... just so y'all know i do not have any vision problems as i simply made the conclusion of what i saw in that sprite, but today i can clearly tell Sonic isn't wearing anything else

As a kid, I thought the sonic 3 sprite had his arms crossed. I always found it badass.

As someone who has an insane fixation about the Sonic Advance + Battle sprites; Sonic Battle technically has a slightly different art style! It's more noticeable in other characters' sprites, but two of the big, pretty universal differences in Battle include:
- Characters usually have shading in their eyes; primarily under their eyelids. Some characters also have larger pupils/irises; specifically Amy and Tails.
- Characters have, on average, slightly larger hands, due to the emphasis on combat.
Though, it's definitely reasonable how many people assume the art styles are 1 to 1; as Sonic Battle's art style is more like a branch or extension of the Advance art style than it's OWN completely different thing.

4:50 this is an example of something known as hue-shifting, a common technique in most visual arts where colors are shifted closer to a specific part of the color wheel the more "in shadow" they are. this has the effect of not only making colors more interesting but also more similar to how light works in real life. colors are most often shifted toward blue or purple to emulate the sun or other warm lights.

14:32 the advance sprites seem to be going for a cell-shaded look for stylistic reasons. in cell-shading, realistic gradients are simplified into areas being either shaded or not, which reduces visual clutter and gives it more of a "cartoon"-like feel. cell-shading is used often in 2D animation due to it lowering the effort and time required for each individual frame, even being named after it.
