In America geese got a bad reputation for being aggressive. In Europe geese have a reputation of not being able to seriously hurt you, while swan attacks you should take serious because they can break bones.

Female Eclectus parrots are larger than males and display red plumage with blue accents, whereas the males are green. The reason for this is polyandry: a single female mates with and maintains strong bonds with 5 to 10 males. While she remains in the nest cavity incubating the eggs and caring for the chicks, the males bring her food. Females have evolved striking plumage to attract mates and demonstrate genetic quality, while males are green to blend in with the vegetation while foraging.

In polyandrous birds, such as cassowaries and jacanas, females are larger or more colorful. They attract males or compete for territory with other females, mate with local males, lay eggs in their nests, and seek out new partners. Females attempt to mate with as many males as possible, while only the males incubate the eggs and care for the chicks. Since many females fail to reproduce, there is evolutionary pressure favoring larger or more colorful females.

In polygynous birds, such as roosters and peacocks, males tend to be larger or more colorful to drive away rivals or attract females. Females are solely responsible for chick care, while males focus on maximizing the number of matings. This results in competition among males and evolutionary pressure acting primarily upon them.

In monogamous birds—such as hyacinth macaws, parrots, swans, penguins, crows, and little penguins—males and females are similar in size and color; sometimes, DNA testing is required to determine their sex. This occurs because males participate in parental care and need to choose the best possible female, prioritizing quality over quantity. Since harems do not exist and reproduction relies on a strong pair bond, virtually all males and females find mates. This eliminates the pressure driving one sex to be larger or more colorful; consequently, females become just as colorful as males—rather than exhibiting greater camouflage—since both sexes are selective. Monogamy may last for a single season or a lifetime, and the greater the fidelity, the less pronounced the dimorphism.
