The book is much better than the rather padded, dragging TV show (with some really great actors though). What Philip K Dick injects so much more successfully into his stories than other Sci Fi writers, is emotion. You can feel what the characters think and feel. You also know they could be wrong and simply have their own perception. Also there's never too many characters, his books are compact and efficient. He's my favorite fiction writer of all time bar none.

A magnificent book. I taught it for years as part of a philosophy in literature course, and what resonated the most with the students was the indeterminacy of history suggested throughout TMITHC.

I first read this book back in the 1970's. I still have that very edition. I have read it many times over the years but, only after watching this video, did I come to realise what Dick was trying to illustrate and it's more prescient than ever. This is 2025 and reality itself now seems to rotate on what people choose to believe is reality, rather than an objective truth. Fake news, biased reporting and double-think have drowned any chance of a unified reality.
I am reminded of a ''joke'' told by a highly-regarded British comedian who, when he exposed the bigoted views of his taxi-driver by revealing the flaws in his worldview, received the reply ''Well, you can prove anything with facts''.
Yes, it's funny but also tragic.
I don't know about Science Fiction, but many people today (and I don't exclude myself) live in a fiction of their own device. May god (or something) help us all.

Thank you, Darrel. I've read this novel 3X and have struggled to parse it. Your analysis provides a context & a writing history that helps sort it all out.

Wow, this was an excellent essay! I have started TMITHC a few times but I was frustrated by what felt like a lack of direction. Your explanation makes me want to give it another shot. Great job with this, including the art and editing. Thank you for sharing it!

Just started the audiobook and I am really enjoying it so far. I don't mind spoilers for older media.

Beautiful and moving visuals and graphic art. Exellente literature journalism as usual.

After several attempts over the years I just finished the book. The book is a lot and I'm glad I got through it. In the book, PKD dives deep into minute details about what seem to be small aspects of the story but later reflect the larger picture of the course of events. I'm looking forward to reading more of his books.
