this actually does happen it's an Middle Eastern tradition called Sati some times pronounced Suttee, it was a historical Hindu practice where a widow immolated herself on her deceased husband's funeral pyre. This act was sometimes voluntary, but often involved coercion or societal pressure. While often portrayed as an act of wifely devotion, it has also been viewed as a form of murderous ritual. The practice was banned in British India in 1829.
