For anyone watching the autogenerated captions on YouTube, the words are PRETERISM and PRETERIST. Not anything else.

I recently found your channels and I’m loving them!

One thing I’ve noticed about modern millennialists is that they hang onto the belief that the end of days is still coming for many reasons but one interesting one is that if they give that up, then they have to deal with the actual responsibility and guilt of having wrecked the planet. Because if the earth is going to burn in the tribulation anyway, then they can wreck the planet with no consequences. But if that “end” isn’t coming, then the actions they’ve taken over generations that have destroyed much of our earth, were and are terrible things that will have real consequences on their children and children’s children.

I love this episode. Thank you so much. Revelation dialed up my Mormon scrupulosity more than anything else. Seeing it as hokum, not an inevitable future is very grounding & calming. Thank you again.

I was watching a lecture by John Hamer from Centre Place in Toronto, and he mentioned that his congregation had discussed whether to exclude the Book of Revelation from their canon because of how different it is from the rest of the New Testament genres, and how common it is for people to interpret it as prophecy, as opposed to simply apocalyptic literature aimed at a specific people living in a specific place in a specific time, but they decided to keep it in for historical-cultural reasons. The idea that you could just reconsider what the Biblical canon included blew my mind, but I guess that's exactly what happened in the 4th century CE, and then again in the 16th century (for Protestants).

Revelation was a huge part of my childhood as a JW. And yes, we were supposed to look forward to the destruction of everyone we knew who wasn't JW. And it was just around the corner, as you said. Horrible thing to tell a child.

Yep. People make decisions with their heart and then justify it with their head.

I love the Bible as an atheist because my family was deeply religious (grandfather was a preacher) so it's part of my heritage. The stories in and about the Bible are just so fascinating.

I think a few people have suggested replacing Revelation with the Epistle from Birmingham Jail.

To this day, the Eastern Orthodox churches technically accept Revelation as canonical, but there are no prescribed readings from it. The official position is that it's indeed about contemporary affairs, with a message of hope for the future, and one reason not to read it is because its obscurity makes it easily misunderstood.

“Revelation is an outlier.”
I love that, because it’s not limited to the book
