“‘I’m from West Texas…’ — alright, but let’s not act like there’s only one right way to shoot birds. Sharing what works for you is great, but it doesn’t make everything else wrong. The tone comes off a little like there’s a “correct” formula, and that’s not really how most people approach bird photography.
At the end of the day, a lot of photographers are just trying to get a sharp image, maybe crop it, and share something they’re proud of. Not everyone has the luxury of perfect positioning, perfect backgrounds, or ideal conditions. You work with what you’ve got.
Things like sun direction, wind, backgrounds — yeah, they matter, but they’re not always controllable. If you waited for everything to be perfect every time, you’d barely shoot.
For anyone newer reading this: don’t overthink it. Use a fast enough shutter speed, Auto ISO is totally fine, and just get out and shoot. Sometimes the background will be beautiful, sometimes it won’t — that’s part of it.

Lots of great tips Lee! And pictures. I'm a Canon user, and yes I get really $%#^ on the lack of highlight alerts! And rolling shutter.

I think I might quite like auto ISO when used in conjunction with exposure compensation, spot metering, and AE lock. Look around through your viewfinder until you see something, then point at some neutral scenery nearby and AE lock to get the right ISO, then take your shots. Came up with it just now after seeing the "auto ISO is bad, look, it changed as I was tracking this bird" demonstration. I'll try it out sometime and see how it goes.
