Giving a Tiny Garden the Perfect Vibe

Small garden design, tiny garden ideas and landscaping inspiration come together in this compact garden using reclaimed brick paving, native plants, railway sleepers and natural stone. In this garden transformation, I’m working with a very small space and a fairly unusual design. Handmade bricks salvaged from the original house are reused to create garden paths, with groundcover plants growing through the paving and old railway sleepers breaking up the brickwork. Three huge granite stones are craned into the garden and used as stepping stones, while Australian native plants and groundcovers soften the paving and will gradually fill the spaces between the bricks. As the garden takes shape, I also explore some of the history surrounding the house and its neighbourhood — from the larrikins and street gangs of the late 1800s to the railway that once ran directly opposite the property, and the families who lived in the house more than a century ago. It’s a small garden with a lot packed into it, combining reclaimed materials, brick paving, natural stone and planting throughout the paths to create something a little different.
