  These tall chimneys were built as part of spinning mills - built mainly in Lancashire - but also in other industrialised parts of the UK. The main reason for them being so tall was to increase the flow of gases through it using the &apos;stack effect&apos;. It&apos;s used to get rid of exhaust gases quickly, without having to pump them out.<br><br>Having tall chimneys also helped with the dispersal of possibly toxic pollutants and gases away from the people living and working in the environs of a large mill.

  Fred was an English working class hero to us .. his humility and natural manner endeared him to the whole country .. by his own words his called himself a &quot;backstreet mechanic&quot; who loved steam engines and all things from a time past when a man had to know how it worked, how to repair it and how to build it .. even had a full workshop run from steam power in his own back yard alongside a mock coal mine lift assembly .. one of a kind and a truly authentic character .. I&apos;m so pleased you guys found him interesting to watch and even though I&apos;ve seen all the footage I&apos;m loving watching it all again... great work!! 😁👌🏻

  He trained as a cabinetmaker but decided to switch careers after he build a chimney on his mum’s house when he was still a young lad.

  Yea I discovered Fred a week ago and I was in shock at first. Then terrified, in disbelief. Then I just locked in and enjoyed it. I&apos;ve known a lotta hard ass men. Read of great men and I know there was, and is still. But this dude is #1. All time great and nobody will take that crown from him. Ever. Incredible. Just watched the scaffolding video reaction from you guys n I think he was just doing routine maintenance for that stack.
