The "Mistress" he is talking about is the stage, his touring, being kept away from his wife (who was also hischildhood sweetheart) Dorothea for so long. I believe this was written near the end of a 200 day world tour.

He wrote this for his wife. One of the greatest love songs ever. <br>The blonde in his bed is his guitar. The mistress is the spotlight/stage. <br>Who wouldn’t want him singing this to them?! <br>And you can now see why we were completely 😍 over him ;-)<br>I saw them twice live at Wembley stadium.<br>The guitarist also has a stunning voice. They meld together so well.
