Every so often, I fill a sink with hot water and let it flush to clear the trap of most solids that settle there. Especially those like hand washing sinks that get just a little water each time. I've always ran a little water afterward. I guess the trap refill and is not necessary at my house, but its a habit from dad's where it's S traps.
In my house, when I remember, I fill those traps in a hardly used shower and sinks..

Thank you. We do have an S trap on an old sink that drains straight down. I'll get a air break assembly to fix it.

Great explanation of the difference between S and P traps and why it's important. However, you make the assumption that if the drain pipe goes into the wall it is properly vented. That may or may not always be true. You can't see what's inside the closed wall. The pipe may just drop down inside the wall and connect up in a manifold fashion where the vent is. I had such a configuration on a kitchen sink. I did install an AAV. Now when the sink drains it sounds like a ships fog horn. Oh, the AAV's you show in the video are not installed above the floor level of the fixture, but equal in height to the strainer. The reality is, it, the AAV can't be any higher than the underside of the counter top.

I'm having an issue with my bathroom sinks. I changed out the sinks from a non-overflow type to an over-flow style and now I'm getting sewer gas smells.

The 'P' trap and all the other plumbing remained the same. This house was built in the late 90's so no 'S' traps are installed.

There are pop-up vents under the sinks and a large out of the roof vent as well. All are working fine.

I have a question. When installing a new P-trap and new horizontal drain arm to the horizontal drain pipe in the wall, should the p-trap be installed slightly higher than the drain pipe in the wall, level with the drain pipe or other. Regarding this as you know the p-trap is a little higher on the side of the tailpiece connection vs the opposite side, so which part of the p-trap am I measuring higher or lower than the drain pipe in the wall?

This is not an issue if the system is properly vented.
