I don't know which is best in this recording, the great composition, the stunning singing or the amazing violin-playing. Just wonderful.

Vivaldi added this hauntingly lovely e-minor aria to a pasticcio Opera (Andromeda Liberata, 18 Sept 1726) about Perseus freeing Andromeda with Vivaldi himself performing the solo
Violin part (his last public performance on the violin); the performance was in honour of Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni (later became Pope Alexander VIII) in Venice & other local composers contributing their own arias included Niccolò Porpora, Antonio Lotti, Tomaso Albinoni & several others...the lyrics translates loosely as ‘Often the sun shines in the sky more beautifully when covered by a cloud; and a newly calm sea seems even more tranquil just after a storm had pass’d over it...’ Cecilia’s passionate ‘dramatic action voice’ is one of her great gifts to the operatic world & we applaud her reverence for such re-discover’d masterpieces of our resplendent heritage from the past...Brava, Madama !

risplende in cielo,
più bello e vago
se oscura nube
già l'offuscò.

E il mar, tranquillo,
quasi senza onda

Cecilia Bartoli performs here one of the best interpretations since baroque arias have been written. Vivaldi would have been very happy to hear it! Grazie Cecilia!!! Bravissimi i musicisti dell'Ensemble Matheus!
