This made me feel seen. I used to think something was ‘wrong’ with me because my childhood is mostly blank—but hearing that memory can be shaped by stress, safety, and development is strangely comforting. Thank you for explaining it without judgment

All I remember is I woke up and was 14 that’s as far as it goes for me

As a psychology scriptwriter, I find your analogy of the 'circuit breaker' to be one of the most medically accurate ways to describe dissociative amnesia. You’ve hit on a profound truth: many people beat themselves up for 'forgetting,' not realizing their brain was actually performing a high-level tactical rescue. The way you distinguished between Semantic and Episodic memory—explaining why we can 'know' the facts but not 'feel' the scenes—is clinical gold. It’s the difference between reading a blueprint and standing in a house. You aren't just explaining memory loss; you’re removing the 'broken' label from survivors and replacing it with 'adaptive.' Truly masterclass-level scripting

    Forgetting was a survival strategy

All those forgotten memories, were trash that had to be thrown away. Now we are lighter.

Realizing that missing childhood memories can be protection, not failure, reframes so much shame. It makes you wonder how many “blank pages” are actually quiet survival strategies.

For me, my entire childhood is blank, I think it was definitely a survival strategy, since my childhood was not a fun one. Understanding that is kind of comforting, but still I feel a sense of loss for not remembering even the nice things. I think even today at 49. My brain is wired for only recalling functional things, which kind of makes me sad too.

I am the youngest of seven children, and I suffered a bad stroke at 6 years old that left me with lifelong physical restraints. I now recognize thatmy parents, brothers and sisters thought they were being supportive by constantly telling me to "Walk right" or just ignore the kids bullying me for having a limp. But that "support" did not address the emotional and psychological trauma that I silently endured alone in my formative years. My childhood memories are very few and far between.

I was constantly beaten by my parents cause I couldn't concentrate. Now I know I have adhd. Childhood trauma + adhd + social anxiety. Nice starter package for life. Thank you
