Just when you think you have learned all that can be learned about the hobby I learned something new after 60 years of plastic modeling.

For the folks liking the suggestion of MEK, I suggest reading the MSDS on that stuff. In my former field, we called it "Methyl Ethyl Death" for good reason.

Before they started making it from unobtainium I followed a hint from an american modelling friend who swore by Tamiya Airbrush Cleaner as an adhesive. Now use Mr Tool Cleaner almost exclusively

Given the ridiculous amounts of money I seem to spend on things like primer, clear coat, paints, masking tapes, airbrush consumables and a dozen other things, then the cost of cement is a fraction of one percent.

Mr tool cleaner is absolutely brilliant as a tool cleaner as it dissolves any old paint, filer or putty! Great for reviving old brushes and cleaning airbrush' but it will also melt plastics hence why it joins our models so we'll.<br>But watch those fumes!!! Every time I use it I have chest issues so ventilation is a must.

I’ve been using Mr Tool Cleaner for the past six months, a great cement.

Tamiya Extra Thin is now just under a tenner online, but still £4.50 in your LHS. I walked to mine to pick some up the other day. He said he won't be putting the price up, so top tip: support your LHS; they'll support you back! I mean, £9 for Extra Thin ridiculous!

Tamiya products are high quality, specifically formulated for model making. They include additives to make them safer, more stable, and compatible with kit plastics. I once tried MEK as glue, but it didn't work for me. While MEK produced a strong bond, it seemed to "burn" or "dry out" the plastic, so the bond became brittle over time and the joint splitted. MEK also absorbs moisture from the air very easily within a few days, inevitably turning into a whitish gel that no longer adheres, so I had to discard it. Now I only use the highest quality products for my modeling, and I am glad they are available at those prices.

Years ago I swapped Tamiya Extra Thin with Tamiya Airbrush Cleaner (the one with the pink cap 250 ml) at 1/3 of the price😃

I’m guessing the bottle and brush is a high cost component with the extra thin.
