Why I use the word “expat”<br>In Thailand, foreigners are stamped “Non-Immigrant” in their passport. That means you must check in every 90 days, can’t work in jobs reserved for Thais, can’t own land, and can be deported (and banned for 5–10 years) if caught working without a permit. So while I’d love to call myself an immigrant, legally we’re not — hence the word expat.<br><br>2. What I do for a living<br>I run a health foods company here in Thailand and have a work permit that covers all YouTube activities. I’ve paid tax in Thailand for over 10 years — through my own companies (an English school and a jazz lounge), as well as during my career in the 5-star hotel industry (Anantara). And yes — I speak Thai.<br><br>3. Can foreigners own land in Thailand?<br>No. But a superficies agreement allows you to control the land for 30+ years, and houses here are relatively affordable (1–2 million THB). If you have children, owning a home is essential for their security. Still, it’s smart to keep around 80% of your net worth in high-performance assets outside Thailand.<br><br>4. About my wife<br>We’ve been together 12 years of my 15+ years in Thailand. She’s a finance graduate, hardworking, traditional, and loyal — she earned more and owned more property than me when we met, and she’s stood by me through both success and struggle.<br><br>5.   P&apos; Ueli you&apos;re a darling. &nbsp;My partner was also from Switzerland - a town called Meilen near Zurick. His name is also Ueli. &nbsp;He loved Thai people and Thailand so much and learned to speak Thai. He also had one sister who was a bit estranged. My Ueli passed 10 years ago at 72. Watching this video is a precious moment. Regards to your wife and your son and all the best to your family.

  I like this guy, he&apos;s someone I could happily talk to, I go to Thailand, I go alone, I talk to nobody, I dislike the drinking culture, I do have a few Thai friends, one was an English teacher, I went up to visit him, up in Mae Sun, 3 hours travel from Chiang Mai, no bars, no shops, no noise, very peaceful, I loved it, I got the best sleep, but again, I too like to talk to people, I speak a little Thai, I also read and write in Thai, my Autism made learning the language a passion, I use my hyperfocus to aid my language learning, Thailand is my happy place, but I doubt I&apos;d ever afford to stay there long term, I spent 4 months during the COVID Pandemic, I loved it, most tourists (farang) had left, shame I couldn&apos;t stay much longer, but I&apos;m only 39, and not old enough for a retirement visa yet, and it&apos;s just not cost viable with short term visa&apos;s long term 🤷🏼‍♂️
