If I had to guess…The boy is projecting a moving, mental image of the game onto a surface that’s most familiar to him. At home, this would probably be a kitchen, or bedroom wall. Or maybe he plays a lot of virtual chess and imagines the board as sprites and pixels. He takes a brief snapshot of the board, in his mind, before projecting and animating it in a more strategic context. Not just calculating, but visualizing. Probably has a photographic memory.
