there was a quote i once heard "i don't believe in fairies, but i'll never let them hear me say that" and if you do run into fey there are rules to follow like never accept gifts (politely turn it down), never eat the food of the fey, never GIVE your name (but you can say things like "i won't give you my name but you can call me ___") cause doing these things will give the fairy power over you fortunately these rules also apply to fairies. that's why they're so terrifying

In Denmark there is a headless horseman on the island of Fyn, who is the ghost of a wicked aristocrat who had murdered his previous wives until his latest had him beheaded while sleeping by the cook and his apprentice.

There's actually also a creature called the "Nuckelavee" that dates back to 1500 Orcadian legend. The Nuckelavee was a sort of predecessor to the Dullahan, but much more demonic. It had the upper part of a man, but attached to a horse on the lower half. Kind of like a mix of Dullahan and Centaur. It was mentioned in Latin manuscripts that date back to the 16th century.

Give it a read whenever you get a chance! It's a really creepy creature that is said to live in the deep ocean, and is said to be the most evil creature in Scottish legends.

4:10 I’ve been explaining to people that the “headless horseman” is a Dullahan, which is a species of Sidh (pronounced like “shee”) which is just another word for fae or fairy. You heard me correctly, the “headless horseman” is a fairy. I know the video hasn’t got to this yet, but I’m intimately familiar with this creature in lore and love when people dive into the darker side of Sidh.

In the intro Meg referenced her video on bansidh (banshee), which translates to “fairy woman”. Bansidh is also a fairy ;)

Ok, to be fair I’m just starting the video but I wanted to say something.

In Ireland (where this myth comes from) he is named Dullahan. My great-grandmother watched him for a solid 5 minutes. Headless man, using a human spine to whip his horse, horse’s hooves catch everything around them in fire. Can’t miss him. If you are looking out your window when he passes by, he’ll throw a bucket of blood in your face. If you are standing outside he’ll take your head.

Edit 1. Fiachra would be a dead man. You can’t bargain with him. You can’t plead to him. There is nothing anyone can do. Dullahan is Fae, and a dark Fae at that. He kills you. Period. Also, he doesn’t carry his head. He wouldn’t be headless if he did, would he?

Edit 2. Dullahan is Fae. Fae LOVE gold. Iron, on the other hand, they can’t stand. And if you happen to have iron on you in front of him? You guessed it, he’ll kill ya.

Edit 3. The Wild Hunt is seen in the sky, not in the ground.

Edit 4. Ichabod Crane was English, not German.

I’ve always wanted to visit Sleepy Hollow in the fall 🎃
America didn’t invent headless horsemen, but we sure enjoy the legends.

It works in reverse too! If you see a Horseless Headsman, it's probably safe to assume death is coming as well. On foot, tho.

As an Irish person I’m so happy to hear more of our stories being told❤also an interesting fact about mayo winning the championship is a big deal because they finally broke the curse that was placed upon them 75 years ago. The team had won and on the way home they passed a funeral and didn’t quiet down and pay respects they kept celebrating loudly so a curse was placed upon them that they’d never win again but after 75 years the curse was broken this year!

The night grew colder as the sound of hooves echoed through the fog. The headless horseman rode silently beneath the moonlight, carrying a legend darker than the shadows around him. Some say he’s only a tale… but others swear they’ve heard his horse galloping long after midnight. 🐎🌙
