I love the idea of taping a metal ruler to a cutting board, to line up your paper's edge when folding.  Very cool!

Thank you for making this friendly for beginners! I'm just starting to dabble with bookbinding (particularly for travel journals for family trips - nothing fancy, but I want them to be bound properly!) and it's nice to have the basic information without an overwhelming amount of technical stuff. 😅🙌

Aim for perfect and you'll hit excellent.  I love it.  That has been my philosophy for life in general and for building in construction.  Great saying.

I love working with the paper -- the folding and sewing -- because I feel confident, that I know what I'm doing, and that if I am sufficiently careful I can control the outcome. I am only now getting comfortable enough with the casing-in to feel like I can probably do a good job there as well. But that took a lot longer. As for the paper, you can find some excellent papers at 80 or 90 gsm, depending on what the paper will be used for (journal or sketching) you can use coated papers that don't bleed or show through. I am also a fountain pen hobbyist, and coated papers are very good for fountain pen journaling.

This video was very helpful. I learned the basics of bookbinding many years ago. In my class, I had the benefit of bookbinding equipment. Later, I made some blank books at home, and they came out mostly like the "amateur" book in your video. One reason I thought my books looked amateur was that I didn't want to spend the dough on equiment (especially backing irons and presses), so I never got a nice tight and rounded spine. However, in your video I was impressed to see how tight you got the spine, which you appeared to do with proper sewing technique. I might get back into the hobby if I can make books as nice as yours without needing to buy expensive equipment. Thanks!
