I think that dead worlds not only create an interesting plot - but also create a really nice feeling that it has been lived in by more than our protagonists and the world that surrounds them.

This made me realize Ghibli’s Castle in the Sky is totally a post apocalypse story, they’ve just happened to have built up the new civilization by the time the story happens

In many senses we live in a post-apocalyptic setting, many different civilizations rose and fell, societies collapsed, peoples were conquered, ways of life were wiped out. And I think that's what makes it so interesting. And terrifying.

9:05 "Dead worlds reveal". Funnily enough, the Greek word that we get the English "apocalypse" from means "revelation" or "uncovering"

I think part of the appeal of post-apocalyptic worlds is the sense of... whatever problems existed in that world are gone. There is no more baggage. You are simply building or surviving with new rules, without concern for the old rules.

I love post apocalyptic stories because one of my favorite parts of writing is deciding what happened before the story started. The knowledge that things used to be different but changed either slowly over time or a bunch at once makes the world feel so much more real.

Best part was when youtube inserted an ad break during a bit on the apocalyptic AI from I Have No Mouth for Google’s new Workspace AI.

I'm always surprised that there aren't more real world post apocalypse stories. The Romans invading Britain, the Spanish in South America, the Black Death - these must all have felt like apocalyptic events to the folks who lived through them. I'd like to see some thoughtful literature tackling this.

"The reality is that some power structures will harden in response and become more tyrannical"

I see exactly what you did there with using that 40k animation. 40k is he poster boy for that concept.

My immediate go to post apocalypse is Rain World, a world we barely know anything about but crawl through it’s dead corpse. There is hardly any world building shown beyond the visual

Note on popularity of post-apocalypses - i think they are so popular for creators because they kinda easier to build and explore than full fledged world. So you can create compact story in seemingly big and unknown world. It's like fog of war type of thing - you can assume what is going on over there, but you can never see directly. Especially for artists - its waaaaaaaaay easier to visually develop dead world instead of "live" world:D
