A proper, balanced, assessment of the Italian armed forces in WW2 is well overdue. Youtube history channels like yours, and Drachinifel, are doing this. A terrific video, and important.

The good SM.79 I always thought the Plane was Aesthetically Pleasing.
The Humpback and Three Motors Design is so unique and Iconic.

It's amazing that Sparvieri could fly under the arcs of anti-aircraft cruisers' and destroyers' guns and slam torpedoes into them at point-blank range without blowing themselves up.

"Started Out as a fast passenger plane, but was adopted as a bomber." For a German like me, this rings a bell.

I saw this magnificent plane and most of Italy’s WW2 planes from up close a few months ago in the Italian Air Force Museum at Lake Bracciano, near Rome. A beautiful aircraft, with an unmistakable design.

My Dad was torpedoed by a SM79 which he said the pilot was mad to fly through the AAA he put up against it.

Okay, I'm usually a contrarian, but I'll go along with the SM.79 being the coolest Italian airplane of all time.

Things never mentioned about the Italian armed forces in WW2:
- Italy was in a state of near civil war since the 1920s. Frequently infantry were ideological enemies of their commanders. Italy's participation in The Spanish Civil War was especially unpopular and that resentment never went away. This meant no one wanted to help make new war machines.
- Mussolini asked Hitler for time to rebuild his military before opening hostilities on the other powers, Hitler agreed to this and then attacked them anyway.
- Some Italian ground forces were considered among the best infantry of the war.

Fun Green Mice fact! To this day the Italian Air Force 51st fighter squadron's logo is a mice jumping on 3 green mice. That is because the 51st squadron was the first to convert from biplanes to monoplanes; supposedly, one of the pilots commented after realizing that his plane could finally intercept his colleagues' bombers (who got all the attention in propaganda reels) "finally we got a cat to catch those goddman mice!".

It was old and definitely out of date, but there’s something beautiful about it.
