Those TVs sold for $99 in 1949. Made cheap and light as possible. Aimed at college students primarily. They found a sweet spot in motels. They'd be modified with a handle and if you wanted a TV in the room the front desk would give you the TV and you'd carry it. I've seen a few with handles and instruction decals on them.

Shango says, “You mean people actually watched this? This thing is so small….” as I watch on my 2-inch smartphone!

Back in the early 60's as a teenager I had a Muntz tv that had a bad picture tube and a UHF tunner. There was a station in Detroit on channel 50 that would sign off at 11pm on weekends. It would then come back on at 1 am to do "testing" they would show Xrated movies to transmit to the local bars. I would use my oscilloscope turned on it side so I could watch the movies on a five inch green screen, while I saved up enough money to buy a refurbished picture tube. By the time i did and got it installed they got in trouble and pulled the movies off.

“This is truly amazing. A portable television studio. No wonder your president has to be an actor, he's gotta look good on television!"<br>-Christopher Lloyd, BTTF

I think radio and TV were more of a wonder to the people back then than cell phones and computers are to us. We grew up with knowledge of technology, radio transmissions and electronics. In the early 20th Century, everything was magical and mysterious. They were raised with horse drawn carriages, dirt roads, no electricity, no airplanes or phones or running water. So a mini TV would have been beyond belief for them.

That set is so clean inside it looks like it spent most of its life in a closet covered with blankets.

My mother told me (was born in the 1920's) that the only person to have a TV in the neighborhood was this old lady the small round screens and the neighbors would come over to her house on Saturday night to watch the fights, she said this old lady would jump and start swinging her fists that she really love the fights and my mother said it was just fun to watch her.

So basically we went from a 3" TV, to giant 5 foot flat screen TVs, and back to approximately 3" cellphone sized TVs ... 📺 💻 📱
