  Egotists always have to keep trophies.  If it was Mike, then getting rid of the book would have been the first thing he thought of.

  he could even have just hidden the book in his nightstand or his bedroom wardrobe - where nobody really would stumble over it by accident, least of all Hank.

  When Walter is in Saul's office, demanding that Saul find him another distributor after he murders Gus, and Saul, the most greedy lawyer alive, tries to convince him that he's made enough money, and that he should quit while he's ahead.  Walter is appalled and outraged at the suggestion.  He just can't walk away from his obsession because of his ego.

  NO. Hank had given up on the case until Walt put seeds of doubt in his mind at dinner. Walts ego caused that.

  He could never have walked away. &nbsp;<br>Hank&apos;s stories of drug busts with piles of cash was the lure.<br>From the moment he chose to go on the ride along with Hank, the die was cast.<br>I guess if he had never gone on that ridealong and discovered his former student was meth cook, he could avoided breaking bad, but there was NO point after that where Walter&apos;s ego wouild allow him to walk away. &nbsp;<br><br>The only other option would have been if Elliott had asked him to come back with a more &quot;hat in hand&quot; approach with a &quot;we really need your insight and abilities.&quot; As you pointed out, once Walter knew the job offer was about, in his mind, pity, he could never accept it.

  He could have burned that book, bought another copy of the same book, and kept the copy. &nbsp;It would be completely meaningless to everyone else but him.<br><br>Hell, he could have kept the book SOMEWHERE ELSE. &nbsp;I saw another video where someone figured out that Walt&apos;s house literally only has one bathroom in it - the master bath; there&apos;s no second bathroom in the house. &nbsp;The tray on the back of the toilet was explicitly there to provide reading materials for anyone who would use that bathroom. &nbsp;If someone had pointed this out, maybe he moves that book to a nightstand or something. &nbsp;But no - he kept the one piece of evidence that would damn him in the one place in his house that guests are invited to read and he consistently has a guest who could connect those dots.

  Walt would be like “I would do anything for my family.” Except accepting charity from old friends. Or literally anything other than becoming a kingpin.
