  There’s one big difference between the Italian-American mafia and the cartels: The mafia will kill a targeted person while the cartel will kill a targeted person and their family.

  I believe that the primary difference between a mafia and a cartel is their operational focus and structure, a mafia is a deeply rooted, hierarchical criminal organization focused on local territorial control, extortion, and community racketeering, whereas a cartel is typically a large-scale logistics network or coalition focused on controlling the production, supply, and international distribution of a specific high-value product, such as drugs

  I think there’s another fundamental distinction worth adding here: a cartel is fundamentally a criminal business, whereas a Mafia is fundamentally a secret society that engages in criminal business.<br><br>Obviously, both make money, both can be highly organized, and the distinction gets blurry in practice. But historically, the Mafia’s power wasn&apos;t supposed to come simply from controlling a market. It came from being a clandestine network of loyalty, influence, patronage, and violence embedded within legitimate society. The criminal enterprises were part of how that network maintained itself.<br><br>That also explains why I think visibility is particularly dangerous for a Mafia. A cartel can openly demonstrate that it controls territory and is capable of confronting the government; that display of power can itself serve its interests. A Mafia, by contrast, benefits from everyone pretending it doesn&apos;t exist. The ideal Mafia isn&apos;t an army standing outside the state saying “we are more powerful than you.” It&apos;s a network inside society where everyone knows something is happening, but nobody can quite prove that there is an organization behind it.<br><br>The Sicilian Mafia is probably the clearest example of what happens when that principle is abandoned. Cosa Nostra&apos;s open war against the Italian state in the 1980s brought enormous attention and an unprecedented state response, and ultimately proved disastrous for the organization. After that, survival increasingly meant returning to the shadows rather than trying to openly challenge the state.<br><br>So when people say “the Mafia is dead” nowadays, I wouldn&apos;t necessarily take the lack of spectacular Mafia activity as proof of that. If a Mafia is doing its job properly, not hearing much about it may actually be a sign that it&apos;s doing exactly what a secret society is supposed to do. Of course, that doesn&apos;t mean every Mafia organization has secretly survived or that modern organized crime hasn&apos;t changed enormously. But I think the distinction between a criminal business and a secret society that uses criminal business as a source of power is a much more fundamental one than simply comparing what illegal commodities they sell.
