88 MPH had nothing to do with Time Travel, it was just the speed that DOC chose to activate the Flux Capacitor. Think about it. If he set it to 55 MPH, everytime he was driving on the Interstate the DeLorean could be bouncing around in time when they didn't want it to. So he chose a speed that he would not be regularly driving. In Part III he could not reset it to a lower speed in 1885 without a computer.

It is a messy subject...could it be done? It stories, it be a fun thing, but in reality, it is a huge messy complicated thing with a one way trip that runs a very big ris, that could put the person, or the universe in harm's way to achieve the impossible, while somehow surviving the event, copying with the new stuff and becoming a part of that reality. It isn't a fun thing at all. You'd have to figure it out yourself, while dealing with a serious bunch of problems. The whole thing just takes the fun out of everything. But a person would need something bigger than a Delorean to make it work....e

No the whole theory has been refuted again and again by Neil Degrassi Tyson making down to earth time travel nearly impossible. The new school time travel theorys are based in space and you can go back in time in terms of light years to witness the dawn of the earth, through a telescope. You have to travel fast at the speed of light plus or minus 900 billion miles per hour.
