The autofocus jumping off subject has been driving me nuts too, so it's oddly reassuring to know even the best are dealing with it. Thanks for being so honest—it’s a good reminder that it’s not always 'operator error'!

The fact that you enjoy while talking to each other is very important. Nice companions will lead to nice time, results follow..

You spoke about subject detection and only yesterday I had a breakthrough with my Canon R6m2. I'd (back-button) spot focus on the bird then swap to (back-button) subject detect (set to 'animals'). The contrary machine would then lock onto something that couldn't be mistaken for a bird.
I tried 'subject to detect' of Auto (because you never know) and it would pick any random object. BUT changing it back to Animals has (at least for now) seems to have made it check its firmware (1.6.0) again for what birds look like.
Yes, it still gets squirrelly if I hold the back button too long, but it's better.
I agree 100% with Jan; early adoption of firmware isn't the kind of excitement I need in my life.
Thanks gents, great show!

As always, I love it when you two guys get together. This video is a particularly good one for me. I'm back and forth between my 24 megapixel and 45 megapixel cannons. But honestly, after using the R1 I find myself drawn to it the majority of the time. I just need to get closer to my subjects now. That's all 🙂

I just watched this last night, and was relieved to find out that it wasn't just me with AF frustrations! Honestly, I've heard so much about how great the mirrorless AF systems are, but I have not had that experience. When it works, it works great. But I agree with Duade - it should recognize the difference between a bird and a branch or grass. I bought the Sony A1 4 years ago, and have regretted it ever since. The high frame rates, high megapixels, and other advances don't mean a thing if the subject is blurry.

I'm actually not surprised Jan could recover that underexposed image. Its because of the iso invariant sensor. To set the iso correctly in camera would not change the noise in the image in this case. It potentially even saved him from blowing the highlights as they are harder to recover. He did a very good job tho.
