I thought the show was pretty obvious about it, but you might&apos;ve been thrown off by the visceral reaction Ed had to the discovery at first. He says he&apos;s not sad about it after he calms down, first because it proved that bringing people back from the dead with alchemy was impossible. So he didn&apos;t &quot;fail&quot; at it, he just couldn&apos;t do the impossible. Second, because he had always thought he forced his mother to die a second time, but knowing the thing they created was never his mother in the first place, he was relieved. Btw, I&apos;m glad you found something to enjoy in this show, off the top of my head it might just be my favorite anime. It can be pretty cheesy at times but I also found it emotionally resonant, and the buildup and pacing of this show is honestly one of the best cases I&apos;ve seen in fiction, at least imo.

  Being able to effectively redo the show really helped them with the pacing, I think. After it is done doing setup, Fullmetal basically never stops while also not feeling rushed. Scenes take as long as they need to, not as long as the runtime demands.(generally)

  Alphonse is a good little brother representation, I am a little brother, and when I saw the older series when I was a child I felt that, being the little one you want to be with your older brother, he protects you, makes you feel safe despite being different, so you want to do things like him, but you are also your own person, and that, little by little starts to overshadow what was just being like your brother, and then you become your own person fully, you still have what you shared before, but your views can be clearly different, opposite even, and yet, no matter the time that passes, the older wants to protect the youngest and the youngest wants to be recognize by the older, even when it has happen already. I don&apos;t think I can put this into words completely, but they are a good representation of fraternal brotherhood. (BTW, my father lived with his other family so we barely saw him and our mother was working 12h shifts in the ICU, so neither was around that much, making these characters more impactful to me)

  <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z41JXx6bH4c&amp;t=1155">19:15</a> Maybe the voice acting was different in the dub or something, but I read that scene as Ed being overwhelmed with emotion from the realization, maybe the guilt dissolving into relief, maybe generally reprocessing the whole situation, but definitely not sad to find out it wasn&apos;t his mom. Yeah he&apos;s not smiling about it but can you blame him in that situation?
