The reason the dude with the snail reminded you of an Oompa Loompa is because that's literally the same actor who played the Oompa Loompas in the Johnny Depp version

42:44 how do you know. Bastion was hiding in an attic at the school. You never see what the dad is doing after that first scene. He’s not the worst dad, he’s lost his wife as well and doesn’t know how to connect to his son. She was a dreamer like Bastion hence her name, Moon Child btw. Everyone hated the Artax scene but the Rock Biter one gets me more. Thats the representation of Bastions dad. “They look like big strong hands” every kid sees their dad as a big strong person. “The nothing just took them right out of my hands.” He couldn’t keep his wife from dying and doesn’t know how to help his son. “I’m just gonna sit here and let it take me too.” He has depression himself, has given up on his dreams, and started drinking hence the weird hangover mixture at breakfast to get rid of the hangover.

For some reason, you ended up watching the international version. The note Bastian left for the bookseller read something like, "Don't worry, I'll bring it back."

33:50 "People who have no hopes are easy to control."
I first saw this movie 40 years ago. I didn't really understand this quote as a kid, but as an adult I see examples of this everywhere I go.

People tend to miss the other message in this, besides encouraging your dreams, it's about grief and depression. So many hints, the Swamps of Sadness, The Nothing, indifference from Moriah the turtle, when the wife of the scientist says "It has to hurt to heal." Loads of lessons you get, especially as an adult you didn't carch as a child.

You asked the question "who's watching us?" Isn't it obvious? That's us, your viewers. Reaction videos added a whole level to this that this movie didn't even anticipate. The real question is, who's watching us?

The kid who played Bastian is named Barrett Oliver. He was also in Cocoon, and was the star of D.A.R.Y.L. where he played an android. It was really good.

The actor is Deep Roy who actually did play the Oompa Loompa from the film "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" but I mostly knew him as the robot dummy villain Mr. Sin from "Doctor Who".

It's so weird to me, being a kid from the 80s. We could handle movies like this and understood them. Most of us anyways. We watched this in school every year through grade school in the 80s. We were kids, we understood death. We all knew someone if the family that has passed. We could handle the horse dying, because we were more mature, because we were allowed to be. And, after watching it once, you know the horse comes back at the end. We understood it was a movie and not real life. You could make anything you wanted and it really didn't phase us. We watched stuff like Friday the 13th, Nightmare On Elm Street, a lot of parents let kids watch rated-R movies.

I had a teacher explain something about this film that nobody ever gathers. You will get a lot of people saying that about the grief and sadness in the movie and what that represents. But the reality is we did gather that back then, even as children. We got the metaverse thing. We got that it was a fantasy for a family, mainly for children and younger adults.

All of Sabastions wishes come true, because that is what stories are. They are people's wishes coming true. Whatever your mind can imagine, you can write it, and you have as many things as you want to imagine and write. Your imagination has no limits. So, start wishing, start writing, and make your wishes come true. But you can't start any story, without a lead character and that character needs a name.

This is why Bastion has to give a name, if he wants to write stories, he has to start with the person's name. As, soon as Sabastion gave the name, his wishes, his imagination writing the story became true. They could hear Sebastion, because Sebastion wrote the story. The story was like no other story ever before. Why? Because when you read someone else's writing, you are reading their wishes, and you always get to go back to yourself. But when you are the writer, the characters are you, they are your creations, your wishes. And, you don't get to leave those characters behind, because they come from you.

And, if you become a good a writer, people will be inspired, and these people will get their own fantasia, with their own dreams. and the next stories for the next generation to read and be inspired by.

The Neverending Story is a allegory for grief and depression, depicted here as "The Nothing." We see The Nothing destroying Fantasia, which we are told by Gmork (the wolf-like servant of The Nothing) is actually a world built upon the hopes and dreams of people. So the reason The Nothing is destroying Fantasia is that Bastian's grief over his Mother's death has led to depression and he is struggling to maintain his hopes and dreams, struggling to feel much of anything. Sometimes viewers ask why the Childlike Empress sends Atreyu on his arduous quest despite already knowing that having a human child simply give her a new name was all it would take to save Fantasia. Well, the reason is expressed by Urgl (the cave-dwelling Gnome "wench") when she tells Atreyu, "It has to hurt if it is to heal." She's saying that you can't move through and overcome grief and depression by running from it, but rather, you have to face it and allow yourself to feel. Thus, the Empress knew that it wasn't her new name itself that would save Fantasia, it was the internal journey Bastian needed to go on by following Atreyu's quest. A journey through his own grief which would allow Bastian to overcome his depression, allow him to feel again, allow him to follow his hopes and dreams and in doing so, rebuild Fantasia anew.

Such an important topic, so beautifully covered.

I'm sure the book and this film have helped countless people all around the world.
