I've learned to respect Subaru outback. not a sexy car, not speedster. My wife's 2018 finally died at 300k. reason? Brand new "technician" at big box store, instead of changing the oil, drained transmission fluid.
Even after that, it lasted almost 100k. That car was a tank.

The Japanese head of Subaru said that the reason Subaru engines are so dependable is because instead of inventing a new engine design every few years, they just make small improvements to their proven boxer design every year.

We have 3 in my immediate family. An 86 GL Wagon, 2001 Outback, and a 2024 Crosstrek. Over 38 years, they have the same basic engine design in all of them.

My 2015 Outback has been relatively problem free always done the proper maintenance and transmission services and been a trooper in the Maine winters up here! Just did another major service last week had every single fluid in it replaced at 191K I plan on driving it till it dies! Probably one of the most sound purchases I’ve ever made. Thank you Wizard for clearing the Subaru name from yester year!

In September 2024 I bought a 2006 Subaru Forester with 336,000 miles on it for $500. Seller said it made a horrible noise. Replaced a broken crank pulley, alternator belt and radiator. Car started right up. Replaced front pads/rotors and rear struts. Added some Weathertech mats and touch screen stereo. Found some wheels with Michelin X Ice/ Snow tires on Facebook for $600. Drove it all winter. Beast in the snow. In the spring I had a bad oil leak. Bought a JDM replacement engine ( 50 to 60 thousand miles) and had some rust over the rear fenders repaired. Mounted a skid plate to protect the engine and bought another set of wheels for light off roading. So far I have spent about $5k. I am 59. This car will still be on the road after I can no longer drive.

My girlfriend bought a brand new 2025 Subaru Legacy that was fully loaded (except for leather & sunroof) last March for only $26,000. What a deal. Adequate power, good handling, good gas mileage, great interior and trunk room, smooth and comfortable ride, and AWD for that price will never be seen again.

If you maintain em, they last forever. But they are very finicky if you don’t maintain em.

When dealing with a 3-holer, make sure you put the right fluid in the right hole. Important life lessons.

Such a good tip for Subaru owners. Read an FSM and verify the plug locations online before draining a subaru transmission 😅

I own a 2013 Outback wagon that has 158k on the clock. Doing the CVT fluid drain and fill at 160k and then 190k. Runs like a Swiss watch. Love this car.
