I grew up in an isolated rural valley. The highly related families there routinely sent their sons away to work in the nearest cities, with specific instructions to 'bring home a wife'. Not much has changed!

The leaving of the copper axe suggests to me the possibility that Otzi was murdered by someone he knew, someone who lived in a community that knew and liked Otzi -- so if the murderer suddenly appeared with the copper axe, the community would be suspicious. As today, presumably most murder victims were killed by someone they knew.
