Hi. My father works for EDF energy who are responsible for designing these UK nuclear reactors from the last generation AGR ( Advanced Gas-cooled Reactors) to the current generation PWR (Pressurised Water Reactor). He specifically works on the design of the fuel rods that are the heart of the entire reactor.
Only 3 people in the UK are qualified to do his job. All 3 work in the same office.

The UK's nuclear reactor industry did not per say stop building reactors. It's not like we build a reactor then put our feet up until we need to build another one.
During the entire life of the reactor the Engineers test the reactor design and formulate operational safety cases to justify the continued operational safety of the reactors we have. So we are constantly improving the design of the reactors as we go along. The as built reactor can be different at the end of it's service life with numerous changes made to it to keep it operating safely.

One of the reasons the UK has one of the best operational service history with nuclear power of any nation. Just one nuclear incident on record in all our history.

A lot of the design complications and budget overruns were down to the safety aspect.
The reactor's design and facility design takes notice of all the reactor accidents in world history and has taken steps to prevent similar issues happening again. A containment vessel that can plunge the reactor elements into a coolant tank if the reactor is about to Chernobyl itself.
The site has a 10 metre high wall at the coastline to prevent a tsunami flooding the site and the backup generators are not in a single location making them vulnerable to flooding unlike what happened at Fukushima power plant.

Even the reactor building has a done that can withstand a 747 crashing into it.
This reactor may be the most expensive but it is also the most safe.

Mr Folse I’d highly recommend watching more videos from Mustard and Real Engineering. Those channels showed me that the Cold War was also a race not just between nuclear technologies but aviation as well. It’s surprising to see how interconnected Nuclear and Aviation industries are

I was once told by a civil engineer friend, a quick and dirty way of estimating a construction project's scope is to count the full size construction cranes on site, bonus points for uncommonly heavy ones. On the aerial shot of Hinkley Point C, I lost count.

Hey Sir Folse. I wanted to tell you, that you are a big inspiration for me. I love your content and amazing explanations no matter how difficult the subject is.
For the moment I am studying Physics and planing to enter the nuclear energy field as well. Plus your explanations help me way better, then my professors. All in all, thank you a lot Sir Folse.

17:56 by the way EPR is a not a boiling water reactor, it is a pressurized water reactor too as said in the name

I work as an engineer designing building electrical systems in the US. When we issue drawings it snap shots the codes and apply them. I wonder how that works in the UK and if that would even apply in the US on something like a nuclear facility.

Wow...get a load of that Big Carl crane...huge stacks of counterweights, that bloke has! LOL

The Uk just doesn’t have ‘remote areas’ like the US does. You can squeeze the country one and half times over into California (IIRC) and yet it’s home to roughly 1/6th of the US population.

That’s a lot of people, and not a lot of space.

This fact alone is something a lot of Americans never really consider when discussing infrastructure projects.

Someone is always poorly affected.

Still, I really hope the UK can get over this hurdle and we can meet the net zero challenge *and more*, exporting energy and expertise in creating energy across the world.

With a site of that size I suspect at least some of the structures on site are probably facilities that exist solely for the staging and even production of materials. For larger structures using that much of materials like concrete which is not the easiest material to transport due to the specialist transport needs it is not uncommon to build a whole concrete plant on site for example. So I suspect that at least some of that site area is actually instrumental infrastructure built to facilitate the actual construction itself. Granted I would presume as far as possible those structures would probably be designed that they can be refitted for use to house various uses for the plant after construction too warehouse, garage, and factory buildings would presumably in many cases be suitable as sheltered storage for chemicals, equipment, spare parts, and vehicles required for routine operations and maintenance of the facility after commissioning too. Maybe not to the same degree as is needed when you are mixing tens of thousands of cubic metres of concrete per batch for some of the construction pours but you still have a large industrial facility that needs continuous supplies of various materials and equipment for operations and maintenance after construction.
