Inside Elon Musk’s $119 Billion TERAFAB — Nothing Like This Exists On Earth!

Elon Musk is planning something that sounds like science fiction: a single building costing 119 billion dollars, called Terafab. If built, it would be the largest factory the world has ever seen, covering 100 million square feet and capable of producing up to 1 million silicon wafers every month. That kind of output would put it in direct competition with the biggest names in semiconductors, including TSMC, Nvidia, and Samsung. But the real story is not just about size or cost. Right in the center of the complex, the plans show a giant circle that could hold a free electron laser, a technology that might completely change how the most advanced chips on Earth are made. The reason Musk needs a project this massive comes down to one problem shared across Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI. The Cybercab self-driving car, the Optimus humanoid robot, Starlink satellites, and giant AI models all need advanced chips in numbers the world has never produced. Musk has said the entire planet currently makes only about 2 percent of the AI chips his companies will need. Terafab is his answer: a facility almost 10 times bigger than Gigafactory Texas, roughly 50 times larger than the Pentagon by floor space, designed to handle everything from chip fabrication to memory systems, advanced packaging, and testing under one roof. Inside, a central free electron laser could generate EUV light and pipe it to hundreds of lithography machines instead of relying on individual light sources in each unit. The project also faces enormous challenges around power, with plans for natural gas plants and battery storage to keep the factory running 24 hours a day, and the need for deep manufacturing expertise, reportedly addressed by bringing in a former Intel leader with 17 years of experience in advanced chip production. If Terafab works, it could reshape the global semiconductor industry and prove that a single centralized facility can outperform the traditional chip-making model.
