This music is more psychedelic than half the actual late-60s psych scene. It enhances the vibe into something surreal and mystic. It’s surreal to think that in the same decade we imagine as “Leave It to Beaver,” there were suburban living rooms where housewives were sipping mai tais from tiki mugs while the hi-fi played music inspired by imagined jungles, mystical islands, or other worlds entirely. Beautiful.

My Mom dropped me off at the Galleria Mall in Houston Texas in 1978. I was nine. She had to work. She gave me $5. I was to be in the designated pickup spot at 7 pm. Not a problem. I just walk around and once the movie theater opens, I'll bounce around until I've seen all our "four" of whatever movies were playing at the time. I did this a lot. If it wasn't the mall, it was the Museum or the Zoo or Herman Park. Sometimes she would just take me to work in the Medical Center. She had a travel agency for doctors and nurses. I would wander around there all day. I remember Dr. Duke and the sneaking into the Planetarium. I walked around a lot. I learned enough to not get into too much trouble. Nothing is perfect.

This is one of the soundtracks to my wanderings as a boy. It's one of those days when after I got dropped off, I hopped on a city bus and took a ride to God knows where. Do you feel me? Do you understand?

Thank you.

I'm reminded of those medieval manuscript writers who would draw pictures of exotic animals they had never seen. It's quite a pastiche, but fun to listen to.

i used to love to cook to this stuff at work. it meandered jsut as much as a pot of soup could. the song strutures were so different it kept me at the edge thinking where the hell is he going with this. same with cooking, the journey of a five hour pot of beans is always worthwhile. it can go so many ways. this is a good collection

Let's not forget the faceless, nameless, wonderful musicians & singers who played in these orchestras. I always found this music inspiring as I wrote stories & essays. It can transport the imagination. On a cold day, it can put you on a beach under the sun.

I wouldn't be surprised if Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys listened to some of this type of music for inspiration. At 17:00, the tune is calypso-reggae in nature with such melodic drive from the male voices. Not as dark as the great Barundi Black records.

There's lots of undiscovered great music in records like this. Esquivel, Martin Denny & the Jackie Gleason instrumental albums with the wild cover art, some made by Salvador Dali.

My dad bought Exotica by Martin Denny when it came out. I was only 3 or 4 and this song freaked me out. I would run and hide while it was playing 😂
