My grandfather was on a ship headed to Japan for the invasion when the bombs were dropped. He had already spent four years in Europe as an artillery officer. He had had enough of war by then so he was happy he didn’t die on a Japanese beach.

"The physics test will follow." Excuse me, when I started these podcasts, I was told there would be not maths.

He didn’t abandon strangling and erotic poetry, he just kept quiet about it. Why do you think the Mrs. drank so?
🙃😂

I find it interesting with all the discussion of "American Prometheus", the aspect of the "Modern Prometheus", ie Frankenstein, is so easily dismissed

Nobody is great that designed a device that could kill us all.
It is what it is part of human nature to create and destroy it is the foible of humanity we create on a mass scale and history shows we kill and destroy on a mass scale.
We should all be shamed by this duality

There were zero hints that the Japanese were contemplating surrender. The evidence is that they clearly were not. And the evidence known to the Allies as of the end of July, 1945, was that they clearly were not prepared to surrender. They actually had very good information as to what the Japanese were thinking.

I am not surprised about fear of communism in the west and I'm so annoyed when children at school are only taught about red scare and treatment of communists in the USA with no comparison to what was happening at the same time in the Eastern bloc, the atrocities there.

Truman's reaction to Oppenheimer is not well characterized. It ignores the context for the meeting. The debate at the time was the extent to which the US would involve other countries in atomic matters. Oppenheimer was in DC to testify on the subject. Oppenheimer was publicly on the fence, but he was also there to testify on behalf of the scientific community which had many strong advocates for international involvement. The Truman administration was largely against international involvement. Truman met Oppenheimer because he had to in order to politically appear to have an open mind on the subject. But it was not a circumstance for a pleasant meeting. Truman was famously blunt in such circumstances, and wrong footed Oppenheimer with that approach. Oppenheimer basically stumbled through the meeting, frustrating Truman.
