I’d argue that Kristoph’s greatest strength as a twist villain is not that he is a villain, but just how far his villainy extends, just how much of a monster he proves to be.

talking about twist villains in AA and not talking about matt engarde is a wild choice

kristoph would have been so good if turnabout trump was case 2 and we had time with the first case to understand and develop a bond of trust with him like we did with mia in the first turnabout

Another big clue about Fulbright I noticed while playing through the game again recently is near the beginning of 5-4. He explains to Phoenix and Athena that he just happened to be on-scene during the bombing so he could help the evacuation along, and when they ask why he gives a pretty blatant non-answer about heeding the call of justice or something. As a player, you're liable to roll your eyes and chuckle because it's a bit of a running gag that the main detective always just happens to be around during these incidents, but on a repeat playthrough that stuck out like a sore thumb. If he was any other character, the fact that he was on-scene during the incident without any real explanation would immediately label them as suspicious, but because he's the detective, you dismiss it. Effectively, he uses his role as the detective to camoflauge his actual role as the killer. Doesn't really change anything you said about him, I just thought that was neat.

In regards to The Phantom, there's a slight clue throughout the game.

He always tries to sell the image that Blackquill Is this unhinged monster, yet time and time again we see it not being the case.

It's a subtle gaslight to try and make the player wary and not trust someone who's actively searching for him.

the thing that i think makes simeon work so well is that we have to DEFEND him. and it's not like with matt engarde where we realize he's guilty, we fully prove his innocence. and that case is a big step in edgeworth's journey of learning to embrace the defense attorney mindset of believing in your client. so learning that he's actually evil feels like a massive betrayal because trusting simeon was a key character moment just a couple cases ago. so he gets to be one-note and gimmicky while still being a WILD twist

I'd put Matthew Engarde as a more viable candidate as a twist villain than Kristoph Gavin, at least in terms of last case culprit standards. Kristoph's more of a Dahlia Hawthorne-esque Chekov's villain example.

What makes Simeon and AAI2 even better is that it's not white and black, they themselves state that Simeon is a victim and that he lost trust in justice, being tortured from the childhood. That's why he decided to get really evil people punished kind of non-legal way, which is not right, but we don't know if they would be captured if he didn't do anything. It just adds layers to him and to the game. I also like how all the cases are connected, AAI2 is just the best imo

What, in my opinion, makes Kristoph so terrifying as a villain is the lengths this dude will go to to settle a petty revenge plot because one client chose to hire another attorney. He has no qualms about ruining Phoenix's life by staging the scene to have Phoenix present false evidence and losing his license to practice law or frame him for murder of the client he felt wronged him. He also manipulated both Drew and Vera Micham and almost pulled off the perfect crime to cover his own tracks. Really, the only reason Kristoph's plan failed in the first place was because of the jurist system test

It's a bit of a mess visually but I'm in love with Bobby Fulbright's design. It's so perfectly sinister. The white suit and gloves, dramatic eyebrows, and cool sunglasses call to mind a friendly, Paragon Detective, but then you see how prominent the gun holster is against the white suit and the red underneath... the gloves harken something to hide, like a criminal disguising their fingerprints... his eyebrows become scowling... all while the sunglasses hide his eyes. Bobby Fulbright is police corruption in plain sight and that's my favourite thing they did with him. "Perhaps the policeman who so casually electrifies someone is not a good guy." The lighter was such a perfect betrayal. I almost like him better not as the Phantom.

I think Simon Keys/Simeon Saint was the best twist villain of the Ace Attorney franchise ever. Like you think he is so friendly and innocent but it turns out he was the Mastermind of all but one of the cases in the game he appears in. Like never before that have I ever seen a villain in an Ace attorney game influence that many cases in their respective game.
