  One of my favorite moments in life involved taking my car to a dealership. I told them the issue, had them generate a quote for repair, then "remembered" I had an extended warranty. Watching them try to backpedal on all the repairs they said were needed still brings a smile to my face.

  This explains why manufacturers are trying to get third-party shops legally barred from servicing their products. They want owners forced into their dealership network to keep paying for all the unnecessary repairs and insane markups.

  I'm a diesel mechanic. These shops should be reported to the BAR (bureau of automotive repair) This is how you close down these predatory shops.

  The only way to be dealer-free is to buy a cheap reliable used car and just drive it. Nobody needs a big iPad in a car or a swipe-open door.

  You know the biggest scam is when they say you need to replace the whole axle because of the boot. They will charge you $3,000 however they won't replace the axle but just the boot and tell you they replace the axle.

  Dealers don't  fix anymore, they just replace. Much more profitable , requires less training and experience.

  They don't call them stealerships for no reason. I daily a 2006 Toyota Camry, 130k & runs like a clock + paid off.
