Tema Port Congestion: Government Announces Emergency Acquisition of Two Cranes | Point of View

#PortCongestion #TemaPort #JosephBukariNikpe #GhanaPorts #GhanaTransport The Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has outlined government’s plans to tackle congestion at Ghana’s ports, including the emergency acquisition of two cranes and measures to evacuate containers that have overstayed. Speaking on The Point of View with Bernard Avle, the Minister explained that rising volumes of containerised imports, limited export cargo and transit cargo have placed significant pressure on available terminal space. He disclosed plans to use available space at railway facilities to evacuate containers and ease congestion, while government works with shipping lines and the Ghana Revenue Authority to deal with containers that have remained uncleared for extended periods. Nikpe also outlined longer-term plans to expand port capacity, including the construction of additional berths by the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority and Meridian Port Services. He further highlighted plans to expand roads linking the ports to improve the movement of cargo and reduce traffic congestion. The Minister addressed the disputed GH¢720 container administrative charge, explaining the government’s engagement with freight forwarders and the legal developments surrounding the charge. He also discussed the proposed Tema-Mpakadan multimodal transport system, including rail, barges and a planned ramp port, as well as efforts to resolve challenges affecting the development of the system. Beyond the ports, Nikpe outlined plans to expand and modernise the Accra International Airport as part of government’s ambition to position Ghana as an aviation hub in West Africa. The plans include a connecting concourse between Terminals 2 and 3, additional aircraft aprons, a seawater treatment plant, and a seven-storey car park with hotel facilities.
