My local 2 meter repeater has a weekly net and that is the only use it gets. Everyone dumps in their call sign and says "no traffic". Then it seems everyone turns off their radios for the next 6 days!

Here in the Minneapolis / St. Paul area of Minnesota...
We've started a Monday thru Friday, 8AM - 10AM gathering, called: 'The Drive On 45'.
Held on the Minnetonka NØBVE 145.450- Repeater, it's a wide variety of conversation and fun.
.
People driving to work, others on base stations, people coming in via EchoLink, and others using handheld radios.
It's all based on fun and learning from others. We especially encourage newly licensed amateur operators to key-up the microphone and join on in. We also have women feeling welcomed to join in and participate too.
Thanks so much for making this video :-) Dan - WØEIB. Rosemount, MN.

I got my license back in 1992. The net consisted of check ins plus an ARRL audio news ‘This week in Ham Radio’. Also, they had weekly Swap Nets.

I received my Technician license early last year an quickly fell out of the hobby due to no traffic and no contacts made in my area. Trying to get back into it. What I was looking for was a fun chat with others. Meet new people. Learn new things. But I see a lot of what you are talking about. I just joined a radio club and find most members are of the retired group (nothing wrong with that , and quite jealous myself). They do a lot of activities when I am at work. I am hoping to bring a revival to the energy in the club to keep things interesting and bring in more members. Thanks for this rant. It was exactly what I was looking for.

My club's nets are very active. Very rarely someone has no traffic. We even started a new net on Mondays called The Pasta Net. Very cool.

For the most part, I have to agree with you. We need to lighten things up a bit. The purpose or original purpose of a net was to maintain practice sending simple messages like Happy Birthday, Congratulations on your Ham Radio License, etc., using the ARRL NTS format. It served as training for when our government needed us to handle communications in an emergency, such as a hurricane or earthquake. While the digital modes handled messages that otherwise would not be sent by voice. I believe the League's failed leadership has caused the structure to come apart. Keep-On-Keeping-On. Remember to have fun.

Yeah, I've listened to the local HAM nets a few times. I don't have my license, opted for GMRS instead for now. All I could think when listening to some of these nets though is, what is the point of this. It's literally just a roll call every single time. You're spot on!
