Believe it or not, those spray bottles were futuristic looking in 1966.

This episode doesn't get enough credit. Excellent character building in this.

Originally, Sulu was to have a samurai sword, but actor George Takei thought Sulu wouldn't have played samurai as a kid so he suggested fencing. Takei then ended up taking fencing lessons after indicating he knew it already.

Ah, you missed Uhura's best line:
Sulu: I'll protect you fair maiden.
Uhura: Sorry, neither.

Started watching in September 1969 when it went into syndication. So back then it was just Star Trek.

One non-obvious bit of Spock character development: originally he was supposed to knock out Sulu on the bridge with a punch or karate chop. Leonard Nimoy, who had fully immersed himself in the character, suggested that this wouldn't be how a peace-loving Vulcan would handle the situation, and invented the "Vulcan nerve pinch" right there on the bridge set while shooting. The director approved it, and the rest is history.

18:47 Actually it originally WAS a two hour long script, the second half continues the time travel discovery in the episode "Tomorrow Is Yesterday", changing the circumstances to " hitting a dark star".

As someone who worked in emergency for 20 years… It’s easy to kill somebody with a butter knife.

Without giving spoilers. There are plot details in this episode that do come into play in future episodes. 1960's tv was generaly episodic. Star Trek was a rare show that built it's characters relationships and backstories. It also built it's universe as it went on.

The incidental introduction of reversing time, or returning to a previous point on a linear time-line, is a real tease for the audience. It's like when a new power is introduced to a superhero or maybe a new use of The Force is introduced into a cinematic universe. Regardless of when that narrative should arrive, if ever, the anticipation of a time-travel episode keeps the audience coming back. (Also: Let's not forget The Time Tunnel was also aired during this time.)
