I love how aot is being studied like the bible: "this seems like a contradiction but I'll look further into it before casting doubt on Isayama's name"

I don't think Grisha made that decision off-screen, it was simply shown to us before the audience knew he was deciding anything. In the manga and anime his reaction to news of Carla's death is focused on briefly (manga ch71, anime 3x11). Although he is looking away, he is clearly very emotional/angry.

In retrospect, I find this brief depiction of his change of heart to be perfectly sufficient, for the following reason:
We've seen multiple times that Grisha can quickly change his mind/be influenced to do things (chronological);

1. In 3x20 he grew up and was content to live a normal life as a doctor, but Grice confirming his suspicion that Fay was killed by Sergeant Gross was enough for him to abandon that life and vow revenge.

2. In 3x21 he lost the will to fight after his friends and wife are all turned to titans, saying "if i had know this was the price of freedom, i wouldn't have paid it". Kruger had to use Fay's and their deaths to guilt him into pushing onward and start a new life.

3. In 4x20 we see Grisha was willing to delay and risk compromising his mission, as he had again become accustomed to a normal life, now in the walls. He valued his new family. Even when the walls fell and he was forced to urgently go and take the founder, he couldn't bring himself to do it, valuing his morals as a doctor. Future Eren was the one who pushed him onwards this time, convincing him as Kruger had done.

5. In the next scene Grisha laments his actions, and now seems to have been shown visions of the future including the rumbling. So he tells Zeke to stop Eren from killing all those people.

5. The scene in 3x11 as I described before. He has lost his wife once again, so he regains his rage and loses interest in sympathising with the rumbling victims. In flashbacks to the injection scene Eren says "you went crazy since mom died" and Grisha shouts "avenge your mother".

To me it seems to fit in perfectly, without even needing to consider reasoning about him being "fated to do so"

grisha went to the crystal caverns, pleaded with the founder to save his wife and family. was a bout to do it, decided not to. then eren pushed him in a moment of absalute weakness by bringing up his sister. grisha then pleads with zeke to stop eren. and then, he was radacalized once again by his wives death. i believe. thats why he says avenge your mother.

In my opinion, Grisha’s actions are driven by his emotional attachment to Carla. When Carla entered his life he decided not to proceed further with the mission Kruger gave him; when Eren gave Grisha the impression Carla was at risk he confronted the Reiss Family; when Carla was dead he was enraged and wanted vengeance.

Grisha was always swayed by the relationships he had with women in his life and his character is consistent to that theme.

I loved this video. It really got me thinking

He specifically ask Eren why he doesnt show if Carla is Alive, not zeke, not Mikasa, not Dina. When we see the brief flashback of him injecting the serum on Eren he has tears and an angry expression on his sight and he tells Eren to avenge, again, specifically his mother. I think another scene of Grisha snapping and changing his mind would fell redundant and innecesary.

7:46 I never really saw this as a change to be honest. What Eren imagined as freedom was the empty world of wonders he saw in Armin's book. What he got was a world full of people that hated him for how he was born. We'd already been shown multiple times that Eren is a very wrathful person, and that he sees people who take away the freedom of others as nothing more than animals. I've always just thought Eren wanted to see the scenery of a flattened humanity because their irrational malice is what kept him from freedom, or at least what he saw as freedom.

It's iconic how Zeke's followers saw him as God and Eren's as the devil 😂

I thought Isayama did it so he could have a dramatic scene of Grisha breaking down without breaking the flow of the scene.
