  The Tornado &amp; T1 trust really started something in the preservation/restoration movement. Cannot believe 3001 will be under steam at some point in the future.

  A marvelous exposition of some of the amazing technology behind late steam locomotives. &nbsp;You have to remember that the railroads had the incentive and the resources to hire some of the best engineering minds in their respective countries.<br><br>The problem of oscillation of steam locomotive wheels was never fully resolved. &nbsp;There is a story that a professor of orbital mechanics in his spare time sometime in the 1950’s proved that the problem was mathematically insolvable and the real cause was the reciprocating motion of the pistons, piston rods and connecting rods.

  Correction at .50 seconds, &nbsp;4-8-4 is a Northern type steam engine. The Mountain type is 4-8-2.
