I really don't understand why they wouldn't have written it to have "fresh" walkers be the smarter, faster etc versions of season 1 and over time they decay into the later season slow shuffling ones. It would be the best solution to have single/low number groups of walkers still pose a threat for the cast through the whole franchise + you could still have the huge walker groups of the slower kind for spectacle. It would also make anyone hiding bites etc or say the prison illness arc be a way bigger threat to everyone. It flat out would have been a more interesting premise.

The Walkers hitting the glass with the rock in the clothing store at the beginning was my favorite. I never laughed so hard 🤣

I just finished season 1. The walkers in this first season scare the hell out of me. They can jog, climb, use tools, open doors, retain some memory from their life, and they make human like sounds, similar to the former person's voice while still sounding monstrous. They moan, roar, and whimper in ways that make my stomach turn. They pay attention to things and react as if they're controlled by a real living creature, they actually look hungry and mean and like they're thinking about catching you and ripping you apart. They'll be slow and act weird when alone but in groups they really get moving. And they ACTUALLY eat you too, I liked that about the original walkers, they didn't just bite you a few times and then boom we see the guy come back as a walker like in the later seasons, these creatures ate you entirely and I liked how the people who were eaten didn't come back as walkers. My head canon is that you need flesh on your body and enough intact nerves within that flesh for the virus to bring a victim back. Like that poor nurse that Rick saw in the hospital hallway. The walkers ate her body but left he head intact, she didn't reanimate. Or Ed, a lot of his body was eaten and he didn't reanimate either. Same with others that we see get ripped apart in the first season.

I wish they stayed this way, it would make situations so much scarier and more intense. They can just gradually get slower as they fall apart over the years but still retain their general characteristics. Imagine a walker that's rotted to hell but still sits in a couch in front of a TV, or sits in a car. That'd be terrifying and extremely morbid

personal brain theory on why the walkers 'devolved' from s1 standards. During the beginning of the virus, people were plentiful. The food was plentiful. Especially in the major cities. They were faster, stronger, and smarter because they were fed. By the time you get to the prison, most of the people are gone. The walkers are hungry, and weaker. They decayed a little sure, but walkers don't seem to decay very fast. Almost a full year with no food would slow them down quiet a bit.
The 'alpha' walkers could be walkers that maintained a steadier feeding rate, and maintained some of that intelligence and strength.

Alternative, the Atlanta zombies never devolved. Rather over 10 months they'd all (or nearly) left the city scattering, being replaced as normal roamers, well, roam into the city. The Protector isn't evolved, it's actually a Atlantain variant

My head canon is that the Altlanta walkers were the way they were because of the CDC, they were working on figuring out the virus along with the French and could’ve unknowingly made a localized variant. The Atlanta walkers are unique but not to the extent on what Europe was seeing so I rationalize it as Dr. Jenner not really seeing them as notably different variants of regular walkers compared to what the French was reporting.

Trouble with Jenny, is that Morgan and Dwayne weren’t in their own house. He talks with Rick about being in his neighbours house.

Honestly things like the "protector" variant are just really silly. Like they go against the very rules of the virus. We know because of the CDC there is no cognitive ability. But the idea of a protector, requires some cognitive ability for it to understand and to leave prey for other walkers.

it would be a fun twist if the Protectors were created from following the Whisperers for a long period of time and mimicking their behavior since there wasnt a herd leader around anymore

I really thought Daryl Dixon spin off would be all about variants due to it being in France, where it all began, lab experiments and all… then I was truly disappointed that we only had it for the first season and that the second and third season stumbled into a loop of “we have to go back but… what if I’m happier here?” like omg pick one already!!! and maybe let’s see some more scary variant walkers pleeeease

Season one was a masterpiece. The next few seasons were brilliant, but it was exactly the decision to make the zombies not being a threat that took away from them and ultimately made the show crap. There was way too much baddie leader trope. It just got silly. And the zombies were just a plot device. The first season was perfect and it's a great shame that the director never got to fulfil his vision in the next seasons.
