I forgot that line: "we'll trade you some ARVIN rifles, never been fired and only dropped once." They aren't talking about the enemy, talking about their so-called allies.

When I was in the military we deployed to Columbia. At a bar one night one of my shipmate, who was black, was "negotiating" with one of the girls. I tapped him on the shoulder and asked if he was gonna "show her his Alabama black snake?"
He about fell off the bar stool laughing.

ARVN - Army of the Republic of Vietnam. They had a reputation for unreliability and cowardice. The idea is that they would run as soon as the shooting starts; thus, the rifles had "never been fired, only dropped once."

The first time I saw this in the cinema, I was the only one who got the joke.
I nearly pissed myself laughing, but I heard others muttering, "what is he laughing at?" 😂😂😂😂

These men are not like you and me. They are closer than brothers, they’ve been beyond life and death together. They’ve killed together. Animal Mother and Eight Ball are best friends and can say anything to each other. They are beyond racism. Later on Animal Mother is the only one willing to risk his life to save Eight Ball and Doc J, when the rest of the squad is ready to abandon them.

Crazy how a scene we saw hundred times in the 90's made all of us laugh ( me, my brother, parents, friends... everybody) and then 25 years after everyone is offended and/or uncomfortable.

Love how everyone was so uncomfortable with this scene, reality is such a slap in the face and a wake up call, like it or not, this actually happened in history, could be your grandfather or great grandfather could have been involved with a similar situation, you never know

For context, $15 in 1968, when this movie is set, is equivalent to about $135 today. The GDP per capita of Vietnam in 1968 was about $125, and a US GI was paid were paid between $78 and $83.20, depending on how many months of service they had completed. So, if she serviced all 9 of the soldiers, for $15 each, she and her pimp would earn $135, or about 160% of the monthly pay of one of those American soldiers, and more than 10 times the monthly income ($10-12 in 1968) of an average person in South Vietnam.
Also, sex work is like any other work involving the human body. Miners and mailmen, cooks and carpenters, they all bargain with their bodies. and to the reactor who said she was sleeping with the enemy, no she was not. This is set in SOUTH Vietnam, and these soldiers were their allies, not enemies.
