  My biggest issue with the movie, and is an issue I have not been able to let go, is that Lucius is Maximus&apos; son. This not only cheapens Lucius by even more of a Maximus clone, but also cheapen Maximus. Maximus was never Lucius&apos; father, he even comforts Lucilla about her old husband passing when they are talking about their own sons. They even mention how their sons are almost the exact same age and Maximus always turned away Lucilla&apos;s advances. This also insiuates that not only did Maximus cheat on his wife WITH THE EMPEROR&apos;S DAUGHTER, but he also cheated on his wife right around when she herself was supposed to get pregnant, cheapening the death of her and his actual son....

  That conclusion, about how these stories get rebooted by implying that all of the heroic success of the original is immediately undone and the conflict just starts over. &nbsp;Star Wars sequels?

  If they wanted to do Gladiator 2 then they should&apos;ve done an anthology series. Completely separate the stories and explore other times of the Roman Empire

  That ending fight was also anticlimactic. The 28 year old Paul Mescal is fighting a 70 year old Denzel Washington. Everyone knows how that will end

  As soon as it said that the main character was Maximums’ son (basically ret-conning a LOT of the relationships we saw in he original film) I knew it wouldn’t hold a candle to the original<br><br>Maximus died dreaming he was walking home to his wife and son. He had avenged their deaths in killing Commodus. <br><br>Deciding that his bloodline must nevertheless continue through a child who, to all accounts, was the son of his old flame and a man he clearly respected, makes no sense at all. &nbsp;It turns his wife (whom we never see clearly) into the ‘rebound’ relationship or that he cheated on her with the daughter of his commander. <br><br>Maximum was just a ‘superhero’ Lucius admired, so he had no bond with him or any idea of his character - wanting to emulate that man makes sense, but emulating him because of discovering he is his father seems a cheap trick.

  I think the worst sin is making Lucius Maximus’ son, completely destroys the rock solid morals of Maximus, and ignores crucial dialogue between Maximus and Lucilla. Just another cash grab sequel, it seems by his recent work that Ridley Scott is spent, time to retire and not destroy the meaningful films he’s made

  Ridley deciding to shoot &apos;Gladiator 2&apos; on a digicam for the sake of convenience gives it that actors-doing-cosplay look like a streaming release compared to the gorgeous cinematic visual quality of kodak and eastman used for the first one where it actually looks like a professional studio movie from the big 5. The other letdown is that you don&apos;t really end up caring about any of the characters so you&apos;re not that emotionally engaged in the story unfortunately. Crowe actually looks like a regal war veteran / Roman general rather than a guy you would see down at your local gym and his performance manages to provoke you emotionally. The first 2 minute entrance alone into the colosseum before Maximus instructs the gladiators to all stick together just for sheer thrill-factor, soundtrack, tension building, visual quality..etc is far better than the entirety of Gladiator 2 (5.5). Ridley is great when he has a good script to work with (The Last Duel / The Martian) but his directorial style can&apos;t elevate a lacklustre script in the same way that someone like Spielberg can.
