Odst is goated in my book. More Halo 3 with enough changes in pacing, tone and level design, short enough to not overstay its welcome. "What can I say, it was a hell of a night..."

I love how in ODST Virgil does subtle things to lead you in the right direction. I never noticed that when I was a kid but it was legitimately helpful in my recent play through.

The timing of Covenant Dance playing was exquisite.

The ending of NMPD HQ is peak Halo. The combat, the visuals, the soundtrack, it's as badass as it gets in a Halo campaign

When I got my Steam Deck I did a chronological run including Halo Wars 1 and excluding 4.

Wars 1, Reach, H1 make an interesting trilogy of 'Humanity is boned' ending with the darkest hour, and Chief pulling though. Then 2, ODST, 3 are humanity's rebound and the Covenant being put on the backpedal.

Two Betrayals is PEAK. It's my favorite level ever, hands down.

Quarantine Zone got done so dirty, it has one of the best songs in the Bungie Halo OST with Mr Vai, and I believe it’s the first time Bungie introduces large scale battles in the background. Everyone rushing their asses and making a mess to get to the Icon is just so… iconic. It’s better than the Library imo.

Outskirts gave us the first case of a pelican using its chin gun to support us (in the alley before the hunters). Metro gave us pelicans with rocket pods on wing hard points shooting the scarab. While not in game effective it was another level of immersion that could have been left out but they didn't and I love it.

I'll say ODST was the one of the bunch I remember best, not for its levels but for its pacing, atmosphere, and balance - first playthrough was on Legendary and I didn't die once, because it had me completely engaged with the gameplay and didn't clumsily attempt novel things throughout.

First thing I checked was where "The Covenant" was, not disappointed.
