Why am I leaving Sri Lanka early?

I visited Sri Lanka about 6 or 7 years ago. It was wonderful. At first I was planning to go to the tea plantations and other sites down south. But, I’d arrived during the high season and all the tourists were heading down there. Instead, I bought a cheap train ticket all the way up North to Jaffna. It was amazing. Virtually no foreign tourists and so much to see. Later I took a train to a small town in the middle of the island. Absolutely amazing and so much to see.

I get it that you need to be where you're comfortable. 1999 I traveled to South America (Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador). It was a great experience but not my soul countries. I've had no desire to ever return. I loved Sri Lanka, as I connected to it. Sumatra is a beautiful-I've been there twice.

Sri Lanka has touch of Kerala, Goa and Maldives... beautiful place. Galle was badly affected by the 2004 Tsunami.

I understand what you're feeling... sometimes places just dont click. I stopped off in Sri Lanka a few months ago, thinking four or five days, but stayed 27... only left then due to the shambles of immigration for a visa extension. Met a lot of lovely people, and will be back next year to see more. Enjoy Sumatra, I love it there too... way overdue to go back

I ate some street food in India, but I soon learned that it is mostly greasy junk food, like you might find anywhere. I found that a cheap healthy well balanced meal could be had in the roadside working class restaurants called dhabas. Back then (1980) you could get an all you can eat meal of dhal, vegetable curry, rice, and chapatis or naan for 30 cents (total), and a small dish of yoghurt for 10 or 20 cents. I am a vegetarian, and I think the vegetarian dhabas were more clean and hygienic, due to Hindu standards of cleanliness. At least you wouldn't be served tainted meat in a veggie dhaba. Usually the dhabas served several different scrumptious vegetable curries at the same time, and you could sample and eat your fill of all of them at the same low price. Servers would come by your table with a pot of each food offering, and ladle whatever you wanted onto your plate, until you finally said, "buss - finished - no more!" It was your lucky day if they were serving paneer spinach, which happened pretty often.
