I was a welder, worked in construction, dropped out of college, owned a big industrial repair shop, ended up at an engineering company doing Waste water, now I work in metrology and lab instrumentation in bio tech. Point is, ya just don’t know, don’t be afraid to make the jump, the lord will provide.

Worst trade is an auto technician. Absolute worst idea I've ever had. In some way or another, everyone gets screwed.

Funny roofer story.

I'm an electrician, and I was doing a job at our local penitentiary. They were building a new prisoner intake building, which is located right next to the old intake/release building. This penitentiary is also situated in the middle of a residential neighbourhood. Anyway, I'm outside installing the boxes for the exterior lighting, and across the street, I noticed a strip of townhouses getting a new roof put on. Just before lunch, I see this inmate getting released, and I'm in earshot of this building. The guard lets him out and says, "All right buddy, have a good one, I'll see you next time" (which is comical in itself). This guy then proceeds to walk across the parking lot, crosses the street, climbs the ladder on these townhouses, and gets right to work. I thought to myself, this has to be the most classic roofer situation ever.

I’m in a trade never mentioned by anyone, garage door service/installer. I’ve been doing it for 30 years. The company I work for has 12 installers and 12 service technicians and (4) 2 man commercial crews and the least paid person is in the 70k range per year, no shortage of us over 100k a year. I am usually home between 3-5 pm everyday. No experience necessary, in fact most the time they would prefer you start young and no experience. Most companies will have take home trucks and will help you get tools if not just flat out provide them for you. With all the new construction (residential, commercial, and industrial) there is no shortage of work and there won’t be any shortage of work. They keep building but rarely tear down. And it’s fairly recession proof, car stuck in they need out, door stuck open it’s a security risk or pipes can freeze. Too dangerous for vast majority of homeowners to fix but relatively safe if you know what you’re doing.
